lb/gal
pound per US gallon
Densityexact by definition
The pound per US gallon equals 119.826... kg/m³, following from the exact pound and the exact US liquid gallon of 231 cubic inches (0.003785411784 m³). The definition is exact although the decimal does not terminate. Water is about 8.34 lb/gal, a number worth memorising because it converts water flow between mass and volume in one step.
Watch out: This is the US gallon. The imperial gallon is about 20 percent larger (4.54609 L exactly), so one pound per imperial gallon is only 99.776 kg/m³. Fuel and chemical densities quoted in lb/gal from British or Canadian sources may be on the imperial basis.
