cable length

Lengthexact by definition

A cable length is one tenth of a nautical mile, exactly 185.2 metres. It is the short-range distance unit at sea, used for ranges between ships, for anchor cable scope and for close-quarters manoeuvring where a nautical mile is too coarse.

Watch out: The traditional British cable was 100 fathoms (182.88 m) and the US Navy used 120 fathoms (219.456 m). The international value of exactly 185.2 m is the one in current use, but older sources may mean either of the other two.
