A kiloparsec is one thousand parsecs, about 3.086 × 10¹⁹ metres or 3,262 light-years. It is the unit of galactic structure: the sun sits roughly 8 kpc from the centre of the Milky Way, the galactic disc is about 30 kpc across, and its scale height is a few hundred parsecs.
