A rod is exactly 16.5 feet, 5.0292 metres, a quarter of a chain. American land descriptions and older fencing and drainage specifications are written in rods, and forty rods make a furlong.

Where the unit came from
Also called a pole or a perch, all three names for the same length. One much-repeated derivation has it standardised as the total length of the left feet of the first sixteen men out of church on a Sunday morning, which at least explains why it is not a round number of feet.
