league

Lengthexact by definition

A league here is three statute miles, exactly 4,828.032 metres. It was traditionally understood as the distance a person walks in an hour, which is close enough to right to explain why it stuck.

Watch out: No historical league was standard. The nautical league of three nautical miles is 5,556 m, the Spanish legua ran near 4.2 km, and the French lieue varied by province. Verne's twenty thousand leagues were nautical and were a distance travelled, not a depth. This entry is the English statute league.
