yd\text{yd}

yard

Lengthexact by definition

The yard is exactly 0.9144 metres, three feet, fixed by the international yard and pound agreement of 1959. It survives mainly in fabric, landscaping, American football and, as the cubic yard, in concrete. The factor is exact by definition.

Watch out: Because the yard is exactly 0.9144 m, it is a little shorter than a metre. A 100 yd football field is 91.44 m, not 100 m, and race distances converted between the two are not interchangeable.
