picometer

Lengthexact by definition

The picometre is 10⁻¹² of a metre, an exact decimal prefix on the SI base unit. It is the working scale of chemistry: a carbon-carbon single bond is about 154 pm, and atomic radii run from roughly 30 pm to 300 pm. The factor is exact by definition.

Watch out: The ångström, still common in crystallography and structural biology, is 100 pm exactly. It is not an SI unit, and journals increasingly ask for picometres or nanometres instead.
