The megajoule is exactly 10⁶ joules, or 1000 kJ. The relation is exact. It is the convenient unit for fuel energy content and for building energy use: natural gas is about 38 MJ per cubic metre, gasoline about 34 MJ per litre, and one kilowatt-hour is exactly 3.6 MJ.
