The petajoule is 10¹⁵ joules, exact by prefix. It is the unit of national energy balances outside the United States: a mid-sized country's annual primary energy supply runs to a few thousand PJ. One PJ is 278 gigawatt-hours, or the output of a 32 MW plant running flat out for a year.
