Learning zone
Saturn is the only planet less dense than water, a consequence of a mostly hydrogen and helium composition puffed up by low gravity and internal heat. Cassini's tracking during its final Grand Finale orbits, threading the gap between the planet and the rings in 2017, refined both the mass and the gravity harmonics enough to show that the interior rotates differentially to great depth and to weigh the rings themselves at only about 1.5 × 10¹⁹ kg — roughly 40 per cent of the mass of Saturn's moon Mimas, suggesting the rings are young.
Saturn's mass and its 29.5-year orbit make it the second great perturber of the solar system; the Jupiter–Saturn 5:2 near-resonance, the "great inequality" that troubled eighteenth-century astronomers until Laplace explained it, shifts both planets' positions by fractions of a degree over centuries.
