fbm
board foot
Volumeexact by definition
A board foot is exactly 1/12 of a cubic foot, 2.359737216 litres, the volume of a board one foot square and one inch thick. It is the unit hardwood lumber is sold and inventoried in throughout North America, and the unit standing timber is cruised in.
Watch out: Board footage is calculated from nominal dimensions, not actual ones. A "2 by 4" measures 1.5 by 3.5 inches after drying and planing, so an eight-foot stud is billed as 5.33 board feet of wood but contains only about 3.5. The convention is universal and intentional, but it means board feet and delivered volume are not the same number.
