The cubic metre is the SI coherent derived unit of volume, the volume of a cube one metre on a side. It equals exactly 1,000 litres and holds one tonne of water. It is the standard unit for bulk materials, gas volumes, tank capacities and water billing in most of the world.

As a unit of section modulus
The cubic metre is the coherent SI unit of section modulus, which has dimensions of length cubed because it is a second moment of area divided by a distance. Its factor is 1 by construction. It is an inconveniently large unit for real sections, since even a heavy steel beam has a section modulus of only a few thousandths of a cubic metre.
