The US teaspoon is exactly 1/6 of a US fluid ounce, 4.92892159375 millilitres, and three of them make a tablespoon. It is a legally defined measure in the United States, not an approximation of any actual spoon.
Watch out: Nutrition labelling in the United States uses a rounded teaspoon of exactly 5 mL, and the metric teaspoon used in Australia, New Zealand and much of Europe is also 5 mL. The Australian tablespoon, however, is 20 mL rather than 15, which is a real 33% error in a recipe.
