Learning zone
Barnard's Star is the second-closest system after the Alpha Centauri triple, and the nearest star in the northern sky — yet it earns its fame from motion, not proximity. E. E. Barnard compared photographic plates in 1916 and found a faint red dwarf sliding across the sky at 10.4 arcseconds a year, still the record proper motion. That is a full lunar diameter every 174 years: fast enough that charts must state their epoch, and the reason proper-motion surveys are how astronomers trawl for undiscovered near neighbours in the first place.
The speed is mostly real, partly perspective — 90 km/s of space velocity aimed obliquely our way. Approaching at 110 km/s along the line of sight, Barnard's Star will pass within 3.8 light-years around the year 11 800, briefly claiming second place. It also carries a cautionary tale: Peter van de Kamp's claimed planets of the 1960s, later traced to telescope systematics, haunted planet-hunting for decades — until a genuine sub-Earth candidate was finally announced in 2024.
